Unions Tasmania will host a community rally at lunch time today to mark International Womens Day (IWD). We will be joined by women, men, and non-binary people from across the community in raising our voices for gender equality.

The last twelve months have seen a spotlight shone on the treatment of women in our communities and our workplaces, spearheaded by Tasmanias own Grace Tame, said Unions Tasmania Secretary, Jessica Munday.

Its 2022 yet women are still paid less than men, retire with less, and arent safe at work. The Morrison Government has had the solutions placed right in front of them from recommendations in the Respect@Work report to create a positive duty on employers to prevent sexual harassment, to experts all agreeing that we need paid family and domestic violence leave - yet hes chosen not to act, and women are fed up.

The gender pay gap between Tasmanian men and womens full-time earnings is 9.1% (at November 2021) but its even higher when you look at women working part time. Tasmania has a high percentage of women working part time and when you include part time workers in gender pay gap calculations you see the gap blow out to 23.5%. No-one should think gender pay gaps of this size are acceptable, said Jessica Munday.

The rally will call for a number of long-overdue changes to make workplaces safer and fairer for women that have been identified in the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) Morrison Missing report released last week.

ACTU President, Michele ONeil, will be in Hobart to speak at the event along with Unions Tasmania Secretary Jessica Munday and Samantha, who is an aged care worker.
