This meeting of the Unions Tasmania Council supports the call from students across the globe for a worldwide day of action on the 20th of September.
Tasmanian unions believe the science and evidence. Rising temperatures will lead to catastrophic environmental, social and economic consequences if action is not urgently taken by Governments and citizens across the world.
Unions Tasmania is committed to a future that includes investment in renewable energy that is publicly owned. We support sustainable jobs and a just transition. This means that workers in industries affected by climate change do not bear the brunt of the change but actually benefit from the creation of new secure jobs. We demand a jobs guarantee from Government to ensure that workers and their families are prioritised as the economy restructures to mitigate the impact of climate change.
We commend the student activists taking direct action on September the 20th and commit to organising and encouraging our members to attend where possible.
